Can You Clean Your Dress Shirts at Home?

Whether you regularly wear a shirt for work or to look smart when going out, there’s no doubt that it can be a chore ensuring that they are kept clean and crisp. For many, this means taking their shirts to the dry cleaners, but this process may be skipped altogether by washing them at home. Here’s what you need to do to keep your shirts clean and looking as good as new.

Saving You Money

Taking your shirts to the dry cleaners can be expensive, especially if you are a regular visitor. Whilst many believe that this is the only way of taking good care of their shirts, the truth is that the same can be done at home at a fraction of the cost.

First, you need to make sure that any marks or stains are pre-treated. Check your collar and cuffs for any signs of wear, and then once you’re happy that you have covered all marks, put it on a cold wash. This is to ensure that delicate stitching, such as that around the buttons, doesn’t shrink, causing a wrinkled effect that is difficult to get out.

When they are ready to be removed, take each shirt by the shoulders and shake it out to help it regain its shape. Avoid using a dryer; instead, hang it up to allow it to dry without possible shrinkage and to prolong the life of the shirt. You can also iron immediately if you prefer the crisp look. If ironing is one of your biggest pet hates, you could even look at investing in a machine which dries and irons your clothes for you. For the majority of us, an old-fashioned iron will do the trick.

Don’t Always Believe the Tag

Many clothes tags will instruct you to dry-clean only, and whilst this can apply to some items, it rarely does for shirts. You may find that some can be placed in a standard wash, but it’s always a good idea to keep them on a cold or cool wash. Farah Shirts, like those found at https://www.ejmenswear.com/men/farah, can come in different materials, but to minimise signs of wear, a cold wash is the best option.

So next time you are planning to visit the dry cleaner, take a moment to think whether you really need to.
